September is Family Health and Fitness month. What form of exercise doesn?t take any instruction, can be done almost anywhere or anytime, costs nothing and has the lowest rate of injury for any exercise? Give up?
Walking is the answer to all these questions and more. By walking at a steady pace, by increasing your distance each time you walk, and by walking more often, your health could greatly improve.
But there are still more questions! When should we walk? What time of day should we exercise? When should we stop? Below are some tips to help get the most out of walking:
? Choose a comfortable time of day to exercise, not too soon after eating and when the air temperature is not too high.
? Be careful not to overexert. Stop if you find yourself panting or feeling nauseous, if your breathing doesn?t return to normal within ten minutes after exercising, or your sleep is affected.
? Don?t over do it! Spend adequate time warming up, and building up. Don?t increase the number of miles you walk to quickly.
? Wear shoes that are comfortable and provide good support. Shoes should provide arch support and shouldn?t cause blisters or calluses.
? Wear lighter clothing than normal because brisk walking generates a lot of body heat. In colder weather, wear several layers of light clothing. They will trap body heat and are easy to shed if you get too warm.
? Some people like to exercise with others. If that?s the case, pick a buddy and get in better shape together!
? Always remember that it?s a good idea to discuss it with your doctor before starting any type of new exercise routine.
