Cancer is the general name for a group of more than 100 diseases, according to June M. McCoy, MC, MPH, JD, MBA, Associate Professior of Medicine and Preventitive Medicine speaking before a Northwestern Memorial Northwestern Memorial Healthy Transitions Program?. Cancer is not contagious, you can not catch it from someone.
Dr. McCoy said that of the most common cancer risks, the Environmental ones accounted for 70 percent to 90 percent of the cases. Environmental factors include:
* Second hand smoke
* Asbestos
* Radon
* Ultraviolet radiation
* Pesticides
Life Style accounted for 20 percent to 30 percent of cancer occurrences. These risks include:
* Tobacco, either chewing or smoking
* A diet high in fat and burnt food, like bar-b-cues
* Sexual behavior. She added that HIV can cause cancer as well as lead to dementia.
* Sun exposure.
Because I have written about the dangers of smoking here numerous times, I was not surprised to learn that tobacco causes a number of cancers besides that of the lung.
Dr. McCoy singled out tobacco as a cancer cause as it increases the risk for the following cancers:
* Lung
* Mouth, lips, Nasal cavity
* Sinuses, larynx, pharnyx
* Esophagus
* Stomach, pancreas
* Kidney, bladder, uterus, cervix, ovary
* Colon/rectum
If you get nothing else from this blog, please don?t smoke. It doesn?t look cool and it damages every organ in your body.
