How To Write An Ebook To Market With

How To Write An Ebook To Market With

Click around on the Net, and you?ll see businesses giving away ebooks left, right and center.

You might see a hair salon with an ebook on matching your makeup to your hair color. Or a yoga studio with an ebook on ergonomic postures for the workplace.

It?s not that these businesses are passionate about sharing their messages with the world. Rather, the ebooks are a marketing utensil.

Why An Ebook?

A well-written ebook demonstrates that the company it?s from is run by experts in their field. They know all the nitty-gritty details, so customers can trust that they?re dealing with a reputable, knowledgeable business.

Generally, these ebooks are given away for free. This sparks appreciation from recipients, who may feel compelled to make a purchase in return (due to the rule of reciprocity).

Finally, the content of the ebook usually suggests ways readers can use the company?s products or services. If a soapmaking supplies vendor writes about how to tint soap red with sandalwood powder, it stands to reason they?ll include a link to their powdered sandalwood.

What Should I Write About?

Notice that none of the reasons are ?the companies happen to employ budding authors.? That?s because the point isn?t to write beautifully; it?s to share helpful information you?re an expert on.

So that is exactly what you?ll write about. If you?re a fitness trainer who?s worked with a lot of older clients with back problems, you could write about safe exercises for injured backs or sleeping tips for back relief. You could even include sketched diagrams.

If you?re a baker with an online shop that specializes in gluten-free pastries, write up your top 3 gluten-free recipes, complete with tips for storing, freezing and serving.

And so on. Determine your expertise, then ask yourself what questions people may have on the topic. Write out your answers in your ebook.

How Do I Create The Ebook?

An ebook can be written in any word processing program (such as Microsoft Word or Open Office) as long as you can export your finished work as a PDF. This preserves your file so recipients can?t edit it.

In any of these programs, you can add pictures throughout to illustrate your points, display charts or graphs or provide points of visual interest.

If you want to incorporate special effects, such as flipping pages or an embedded video, you can choose the right ebook software for your needs from this list.

And How Do I Publish It?

Once it?s a PDF, the easiest way to get your ebook onto the Internet is to host it on your site. Then, share the ebook by sharing the link to where it lives on your site.

If you?re using WordPress, add the ebook as a new piece of media. This works for files up to 10 MB.

If your ebook is larger than 10 MB, the easiest solution is to upload it to Dropbox and share the link provided.

Now, How Do I Market With It?

Once the ebook is finished, you can use it to drum up sales. In an upcoming post, we?ll walk you through the steps you?ll want to take.

To see it, make sure you?re signed up to get emails from our blog ? the form?s below!

Algeria accepts possible Mali intervention

By Reuters

Adama Diarra / Reuters file

Militiaman from the Ansar Dine Islamic group, who said they come from Niger and Mauritania in northeastern Mali in June.

Algeria, a key power in north Africa, has given tacit approval for African-led military intervention to stop Islamic militants in neighboring Mali, sources in Algeria and France said.

The former French colony shares a 1,200-mile border with Mali, and is wary of any outside interference and conflict spilling over its borders.

It fears military action in Mali could push al-Qaida militants back into southern Algeria as well as triggering a refugee and political crisis, especially among displaced Malian Tuaregs heading north to join tribes in Algeria.

Although Algiers would not be able to veto an operation, it would be diplomatically risky for African countries backed by Western powers to intervene in Mali without Algeria's consent, especially as the conflict could drag on for many months.

However, after weeks of diplomatic cajoling led by France, Algiers has now reluctantly agreed that foreign troops will be needed to eradicate the Islamist threat.

Algeria is Africa's biggest country and a top oil and gas exporter and has the largest military in Africa, and second-largest in the Middle East after Egypt.

It continues to rule out any direct support to the mission.

'The new Afghanistan'? West turns its attention to Mali

"At the end of the day, we won't oppose a military intervention in Mali as long as foreign troops are not stationed on our soil,'' said an Algerian source informed about discussions on Mali.

With six hostages held by the Islamists and fearful of an attack on home soil, France is eager for swift action.

"Algeria now accepts the principle of a military intervention, which wasn't the case before," a senior French diplomat said.

He said the change in position came after a high-level meeting in the Malian capital Bamako on Oct. 19 that brought regional and international players to the negotiating table.

A French defense ministry source said there was "tacit'' agreement and that Paris did not expect more from Algiers.

Algeria has repeatedly advocated a diplomatic solution in Mali since Tuareg rebels and Islamists captured two thirds of the country after an army coup in Bamako in March. The Islamist militants, some linked to al-Qaida, later hijacked the revolt.

The Bamako meeting followed a French-drafted U.N. Security Council resolution urging Mali to engage in dialogue with Tuareg Islamist rebels Ansar Dine if they cut links with radical groups, a move that satisfied Algiers' calls for dialogue.

Paris had until now considered Ansar Dine among the al Qaida-linked groups and refused to negotiate with them.

The resolution also asked African states and the United Nations for a Mali military intervention plan within 45 days.

A second Algerian official said Algiers would do its best to find a diplomatic solution, but could also potentially support Malian troops by providing weapons for a future operation.

Terrorist dens
When a coup in March removed President Amadou Toumani Toure, it revealed a deep rot in a country once seen as a model of democracy for the region. Bamako had tried to run Mali's north through alliances with a local elite involved in criminality ? rather than by tackling long-standing issues ? and that accelerated the collapse as a power vacuum persisted.

Al-Qaida's north African wing, led by two Algerians, Mokhtar Belmokhtar and Abou Zeid, has extended its influence partly through loose alliances. Its partners include Ansar Dine, a group of Tuareg-led rebels seeking to impose sharia, and the Arab-dominated MUJWA, say both local and Western officials.

Money from criminal enterprises has enabled the Islamists to outgun rival rebel groups. "(The Islamists) can afford to pay people but we cannot," said Mohamed Attaher, a senior official with MNLA, a rebel group that kicked off an uprising in January but in June was pushed out of areas it controlled by MUJWA.

The United Nations has evidence that Islamists enlisting children in Mali's north are paying their families a one-off fee of about $600 for each new young fighter, plus monthly payments of about $400, according to Ivan Simonovic, the U.N.'s Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights.

In Washington, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta voiced concern about the presence of AQIM in Mali, but stressed the need to work with countries in the region to address it.

"We need to work with the nations in the region. They all agree that we're facing the same threat there from AQIM," Panetta said, adding any future operations would have to be developed and executed "on a regional basis."

"And so our goal right now is to try to do everything we can to bring those countries together in a common effort to go after AQIM."

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is expected to talk with Algerian?officials about Mali when she?visits the country early next week.

Diplomats say any intervention in northern Mali is still some months away with a three-phased plan likely to consolidate the south first, followed by an operation to re-take northern cities and finally a mission to go after militants.

In anticipation, Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal told lawmakers extra troops had been sent to secure Algeria's borders.

"We won't allow any threat to harm our nation," he said. "Algeria wants to avoid having terrorist dens at its frontiers."

The change in Algeria's position comes amid an improvement in ties with France 50 years after it gained its independence.

In a symbolic gesture before a state visit to Algeria in December, President Francois Hollande acknowledged for the first time last week that Algerians were massacred at a 1961 pro-independence rally in Paris. Historians say more than 200 may have been killed in the police action.

Riccardo Fabiani, North Africa analyst at Eurasia Group, said there was still a clear red line for Algeria which was that it would not intervene or commit troops.

"They are adopting a sort of benevolent neutrality. The Algerians are going to stand by and watch. I can't see collaboration at any level other than intelligence sharing."

In the Midst of Climate Change, Can We All Just Get Along ...

Can we all just get along?

This plea, famously uttered by the late Rodney King in a TV appearance during the eponymous riots in Los Angeles 20 years ago, is as relevant to the climate change debate as it then was to the social inequity debate.

The Fall 2012 issue of the Stanford Social Innovation Review is dedicated to the notion that climate science has in fact become a cultural war. The article notes that the public debate around climate change is no longer a scientific exploration ? but rather a struggle over values, culture and ideology.

The science is clear. And, just in case we needed further evidence, with the recent publication of the results of the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature (BEST) Project Professor Richard Muller, a physicist and climate-change skeptic, has declared himself converted. Interestingly, this project was funded in large part by the Charles G Koch Foundation, established by the billionaire US coal magnate who is the key backer of the climate-change skeptic Heartland Institute think tank. Indeed, in the spirit of the newly converted, this report not only finds that climate change is real, but concludes that it is likely all attributable to the human emission of greenhouse gases.

So why are we still not doing anything about it? Why are there still so many people who choose to deny, contradict and scoff at the evidence? Why are we not seeing society changing behaviors and instructing its governments and marketplaces to make different choices to avoid undesirable consequences?

Because we?re human. And humans, notoriously, are not rational creatures.

We need look no further than the advertising industry ? experts in the manipulation of all that triggers behavior change in humans. They don?t deal in facts, in threats, in dire warnings. They deal in aspiration, desire, self-interest, ego and nostalgia. And it works.

So, as uncomfortable as it may be to we practical types who plan, design, build, and measure, our drive for rationality may be the greatest barrier to communicating with audiences who think emotionally. As creators of the built environment we have a tendency to believe that audience members who do not take our design sensibilities seriously, who do not appear to care about environmental concerns, are either ill-informed, ill-intended or both. Regardless of the audience?s education, level of interest or stake in the issue, it is not their responsibility to understand us. It is our responsibility to make ourselves understood.

It is long overdue that we start paying more attention to our humanities colleagues who analyze, sympathize and empathize.

The most successful developments that catch my eye today are the ones that emerge from a collaborative process that engages the entire community in the solution. This is true whether we are looking at infrastructure investment in East London or a new water well in rural Ethiopia. The very best projects begin by listening to community needs and desires and taking the time to understand what must to change if their project is to have the best chance of success.

In this scenario, projects fulfill a private (personal) need at the same time as they fulfill a public (societal) need. This is evidenced by the testimony of happy residents who enjoy the health benefits and social interaction afforded by a walkable, green neighborhood where their children can safely play. Or by the proud mother, now a skilled water technician, who watches her daughter walk to school every day instead of walking five miles to the nearest (dirty) water source.

Our duty then, is not to preach climate change from the rooftops, but to work with communities, to try and help them figure out what to do today to get the future they want tomorrow. There are always barriers. But these barriers are emotional, not physical. We must begin with the understanding that everyone is acting rationally from his or her perspective. From there we must find the right way to communicate understanding, demonstrate responsiveness to concerns and needs, and offer a vision of a future that will meet not only their needs, but the needs of generations to come.

We cannot wait for consensus (and I speak as one who bears the deep scar tissue from my days as the former Planning Director of Seattle) but we can achieve informed consent.

Baseball-Tigers' closer Valverde getting hammered in playoffs

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 25 (Reuters) - The Detroit Tigers, taking on the San Francisco Giants in pursuit of their first World Series crown since 1984, may have to achieve their mission without help from struggling closer Jose Valverde.

Valverde saved 35 games in the regular season but during the playoffs has imploded, getting hammered in the American League Division Series against Oakland, the league championship series against New York and in Wednesday's opener of the World Series.

"It happens for a lot of players," Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta said before Thursday's night's Game Two of the Fall Classic at AT&T Park. "Right now, it's not a good moment for him.

"But we try to support him, we try to talk to him and let him know to forget about what happened yesterday or the day before and try to go for the next game."

In the Giants' 8-3 triumph in Wednesday's World Series opener, Valverde surrendered two runs on four straight hits before getting yanked by manager Jim Leyland, who called on him in the seventh inning.

The lone out Valverde managed was against the opposing pitcher, striking out Tim Lincecum on a 3-2 pitch.

"I certainly don't think he was bad last night," Leyland said. "He wasn't real good. The biggest thing with Valverde is the same thing that's bitten him all year where he's been too much in the middle of the plate."

Leyland said Valverde has the heat on his fastball, it's just that the location is off.

"People have all kind of answers as to what's been wrong," he said. "But from what I see, he was 92, 93 (mph) last night with a couple 94s, so I think it's just a matter of locating his fastball and keeping it out of the middle of the plate."

Prior to Wednesday's game, the 34-year-old Dominican had not pitched since the opening game of the ALCS when the Yankees tagged him for a pair of two-run homers in the ninth inning of a game they led 4-0.

Detroit survived Valverde's ninth-inning disaster with two runs in the 12th in a 6-4 triumph.

In his previous playoff appearance, Valverde came on in the ninth-inning of an AL Division Series-clinching situation with a two-run lead and six batters later Oakland claimed a 4-3 win.

Left-handed reliever Phil Coke closed the most recent Detroit wins, but Leyland may be forced to use a closer by committee approach.

Ten-year veteran Valverde has 277 career saves but during the 2012 playoffs is 0-1 with a 30.38 earned run average.

Leyland had wanted Valverde to get his confidence back in Wednesday's game even though it was not a save opportunity. The Tigers were already down 6-1 when Valverde took the hill.

"I thought it was a good opportunity to get him back out there, get him back on the mound, get a little bit of a feel for it," he said. (Editing by Larry Fine)

PPC Ads Hurting Small Businesses Bottom Line | Tulsa Marketing ...

The cost of doing business with pay-per-click advertising has risen sharply over the past decade. So much so, many small business owners are wondering if the price they?re paying to get their message out is worth the return on their investment.?

As Darren Dahl reports for the New York Times, larger companies joining the PPC craze has caused rates to skyrocket and nearly priced out smaller competitors.?

AdGooroo, a research firm specializing in the PPC market, reports that more than nine out of ten companies spend less than $10-thousand a month on PPC advertising. At the other end of that spectrum, however, are giants like Amazon and University of Phoenix, who spent $54-million and $37.9-million respectively in the first half of 2012 alone.?

The advice many experts offer is to scale back PPC ads and make keywords as specific as possible to your business. General keywords like ?life insurance? or ?car sales? put you in direct competition with a number of companies, many of whom have much deeper pockets.?

PPC also shouldn?t be your only advertising platform. Branching out into social media and search is crucial to drive as much traffic to your site as possible.?

It?s worth looking into SEO services to improve your organic search rankings. There?s even services online that pledge to manage your social media marketing accounts, as well. When you own a small business, time and money come at a premium and online advertising is becoming costly for both.?

NASA's NuSTAR spots flare from Milky Way's black hole

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? NASA's newest set of X-ray eyes in the sky, the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR), has caught its first look at the giant black hole parked at the center of our galaxy. The observations show the typically mild-mannered black hole during the middle of a flare-up.

"We got lucky to have captured an outburst from the black hole during our observing campaign," said Fiona Harrison, the mission's principal investigator at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena. "These data will help us better understand the gentle giant at the heart of our galaxy and why it sometimes flares up for a few hours and then returns to slumber."

The new images can be seen by visiting: http://www.nasa.gov/nustar .

NuSTAR, launched June 13, is the only telescope capable of producing focused images of the highest-energy X-rays. For two days in July, the telescope teamed up with other observatories to observe Sagittarius A* (pronounced Sagittarius A-star and abbreviated Sgr A*), the name astronomers give to a compact radio source at the center of the Milky Way. Observations show a massive black hole lies at this location. Participating telescopes included NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, which sees lower-energy X-ray light; and the W.M. Keck Observatory atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii, which took infrared images.

Compared to giant black holes at the centers of other galaxies, Sgr A* is relatively quiet. Active black holes tend to gobble up stars and other fuel around them. Sgr A* is thought only to nibble or not eat at all, a process that is not fully understood. When black holes consume fuel -- whether a star, a gas cloud or, as recent Chandra observations have suggested, even an asteroid -- they erupt with extra energy.

In the case of NuSTAR, its state-of-the-art telescope is picking up X-rays emitted by consumed matter being heated up to about 180 million degrees Fahrenheit (100 million degrees Celsius) and originating from regions where particles are boosted very close to the speed of light. Astronomers say these NuSTAR data, when combined with the simultaneous observations taken at other wavelengths, will help them better understand the physics of how black holes snack and grow in size.

"Astronomers have long speculated that the black hole's snacking should produce copious hard X-rays, but NuSTAR is the first telescope with sufficient sensitivity to actually detect them," said NuSTAR team member Chuck Hailey of Columbia University in New York City.

NuSTAR is a Small Explorer mission led by Caltech and managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Orbital Sciences Corporation of Dulles, Va., built the spacecraft. Its instrument was built by a consortium including Caltech; JPL; the University of California (UC) Berkeley; Columbia University; NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.; the Danish Technical University in Denmark; Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif.; and ATK Aerospace Systems of Goleta, Calif.

NuSTAR's mission operations center is at UC Berkeley, with the Italian Space Agency providing an equatorial ground station located at Malindi, Kenya. The mission's outreach program is based at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, Calif. Goddard manages NASA's Explorer Program. Caltech manages JPL for NASA.

Final Presidential Debate: Celebs React on Twitter

Barack Obama and Mitt Romney moved on from "binders full of women" to "horses and bayonets" during last night's final presidential debate, and our favorite Twitter-loving celebrities were right there with them. With only two weeks to go until voting kicks off, many celebs were just encouraging their followers to get out to the polls instead of trying to instill their political opinions on them.

Emma Watson Going Back to Brown University in January 2013

October 24, 2012 03:46:07 GMT
The Hermione Granger of 'Harry Potter' movie series is ready to be a university student once again next year.

is going to continue her study in college again after she once postponed the plan because of several movie projects. The nominee of 2012 MTV Movie Awards for Best Female Performance is going to return to Brown University in January 2013 to complete her study, as confirmed by her representative to Gossip Cop.

Emma first entered the university back in September 2009, but left in 2011 to devote her time to promote "", which was premiered in July 2011. However, the actress actually enjoyed studying at Brown, saying once on her blog, "As you know, I love Brown and I love studying pretty much more than anything."

She continued, "But recently I've had so much to juggle that being a student AND fulfilling my other commitments has become a little impossible." She then added, "I will still be working towards my degree. It's just going to take me a semester or two longer than I thought."

Her great testimony about the college also slammed the rumor that she was bullied in that university. She said in April 2011, "I felt the need to let you all know the reason I took a semester off from Brown had nothing to do with bullying as the media have been suggesting recently." She then spent a semester studying at Oxford University, and met Will Adamowicz, who is her current boyfriend.

Previously, Emma had planned to continue her study at Brown when she returned from England, but it was postponed since she was still working on "" and "". The fans can expect "The Bling Ring" to come out in 2013, while they still need to wait until March 28, 2014 to watch the last-mentioned film.

A guide to Andorra cuisine

While the cuisine in Andorra is often likened to the Catalan cuisine, with its added bonus of French flavours and unique cooking methods, it does deserve a category in its own right. The exclusively traditional, mountain-style gastronomy famed in the Pyrenees has been enriched in Andorra, with much more variety. Set between two countries well-known for their gastronomic products and reputation, you can expect to find hundreds of cheeses, wines, foie gras, Iberian ham, baby squid, piquant potatoes, octopus Galician style, and much more.

The region has cleverly married the best of these local products and traditional recipes with new techniques and experiences. While in the mountains, you can take a meal in a typical rural inn called a borda, and be welcomed warmly by hospitable staff and homely decor or you can try some haute cuisine in one of the many exclusive restaurants offering unique gastronomic experiences. Find your way round the menu with our guide to Andorran cuisine.

The status of escargots ? called, in Catalan, ?cargols? ? approaches that of national dish in Andorra. Snails are typically served as an appetiser and charred in wood or coal ovens, sometimes sauced, but usually kept plain.

Catalan spinach is particularly delicious in Andorra due to its mountainous location. At its simplest, it is sauteed greens with raisins and pine nuts and a little black pepper.
One of the most famous and popular dishes in Andorra is Trinxat, which is basically an alpine take on ?bubble and squeak?. As is the standard in a mountainous climate, the locals learned to make the most of what crops grow best on poor soil and at altitude, so potato frequently features in Andorran dishes. Equally, so does pork, as the mountainous landscape also means that grazing land for cattle is at a minimum. Trinxat, meaning chopped in Catalan, is then a hearty mash of potatoes and cabbage, fried in a skillet-sized cake and garnished with fat back or smoky bacon.
The most surprising thing about Andorran food is the emphasis on seafood.Mountains always mean trout, so that?s a given, but the rest of the seafare on the menu seems more attuned to the coast than to the stream. NORMAN ? University of Oklahoma President David Boren has released an open letter to Sooner fans, urging them to be hospitable to Notre Dame fans this weekend, when the No. 5 Fighting Irish visit Owen Field for the first time since 1966.

The game, which will be nationally broadcast on ABC at 7 p.m., features two teams still alive in the BCS championship race. Oklahoma is 5-1 and ranked No. 8 in the latest BCS standings; Notre Dame is ranked fifth.

Here is the full text of Boren?s letter:

Dear members of the OU community,

This will be a special weekend. The Oklahoma Sooners will have the chance to post a VICTORY as we observe the 55th Anniversary of the ending of OU?s 47-game winning streak ? the longest in college football history. A visit by ESPN?s GameDay will add to the excitement.

It?s a time for wins both on and off the field.? In 1999, the last time we played Notre Dame, several of us made the trip to South Bend for the game. We have never experienced greater hospitality when visiting another campus. Everywhere we went on campus, from the ticket takers at the stadium to students and fans we met on the campus, we were warmly greeted by the words, ?welcome to Notre Dame.? We were stopped by those who wanted to tell us how much they respect Oklahoma. We now have a chance to show our visitors from Notre Dame the same kind of warm hospitality in return. While our team wins on the field, it?s time for the rest of us to step up and demonstrate ?Championship Hospitality.?

Boomer Sooner,

David Boren

Crossroads Ad Features Parents of Cancer Victim Befriended by Romney

Outside interest group Crossroads GPS, co-founded by Karl Rove, has released a new television ad for Mitt Romney featuring parents of a cancer victim talking about how the GOP presidential candidate befriended and counseled their son.

The group is spending $4.1 million on the ad, which begins airing in Ohio and Wisconsin Tuesday, Politico reports.

The ad spotlights Ted and Pat Oparowski, whose son David was diagnosed with cancer in 1979. They knew Romney through their church. ?Mitt used to go visit David in the hospital,? Pat says in the ad. ?He and David developed quite a friendship.?

David asked Romney for his help in writing a will and requested that Romney give the funeral eulogy. ?He gave a beautiful eulogy,? Pat says.

"To spend time with a 14-year-old boy in his last days, you cannot help but know that he's caring," she says. "He cares about people and about their needs. I think he's going to be able to get us back on track. I really do."

Few of the ads produced for Romney by either his campaign or outside groups have included personal testimonials like this one.

Company's survey succeeded because of employee trust ...

After a major merger, Sims Metal Management in Princeton, N.J., polled employees to learn how engaged they were in their work, and got an overwhelming response.

More than 90% of employees of the world?s largest metal and recycling company responded to the organization?s first-ever employee engagement survey. Execs attribute the impressive showing to these factors:

  • The CEO made it clear the survey had his backing.
  • The company assured employees that responses would be confidential, and that they would see the survey results?good and bad.
  • Management pledged to use the results to make appropriate changes.

The survey found overall employee engagement was 77%, which Sims says is higher than the manufacturing-industry average.

Italian scientists convicted over earthquake warning

L'AQUILA, Italy (Reuters) - An Italian court convicted six scientists and a government official of manslaughter on Monday and sentenced them to six years in prison for failing to give adequate warning of a deadly earthquake which destroyed the central city of L'Aquila and killed more than 300 people in 2009.

The seven, all members of an official body called the National Commission for the Forecast and Prevention of Major Risks, were accused of negligence and malpractice in their evaluation of the danger of an earthquake and their duty to keep the city informed of the risks.

The case has drawn wide condemnation from international bodies including the American Geophysical Union, which said the risk of litigation may deter scientists from advising governments or even working to assess seismic risk.

A 6.3 strength earthquake struck L'Aquila, in Italy's Abruzzo region at 3.32 a.m. on April 6, 2009, wrecking tens of thousands of buildings, injuring more than 1,000 people and killing hundreds of others in their sleep.

At the heart of the case was whether the government-appointed experts gave an overly reassuring picture of the risks facing the town, which contained many ancient and fragile buildings and which had been partially destroyed three times by earthquakes over the centuries.

The case focused in particular on a series of low-level tremors which hit the region in the months preceding the earthquake and which prosecutors said should have warned experts not to underestimate the risk of a major shock.

The scientists are unlikely to be sent to jail pending a probable appeal trial.

Extreme right strengthens as Greece economy sinks

With the Greek unemployment rate at 25 percent, anti-foreigner sentiment is growing. NBC News' Andy Eckardt meets politician Ilias Panagiotaros of the far-right Golden Dawn party and Ali Rahimi, an Afghan national who was attacked by a mob and told to leave Greece.

By Andy Eckardt, NBC News

ATHENS, Greece -- Ali Rahimi was?enjoying a warm Greek evening, chatting away with two friends, when a mob of 15 people approached and asked where they were from.

"I told them that I am from Afghanistan and they said that it is time for me to go back to my country," the 28-year-old asylum-seeker told NBC News.

Rahimi attempted to run away but was cornered, beaten, hit over the head with a bottle and stabbed in the chest and back by three assailants in the entryway of his Athens apartment building.?

"When police arrived they called an ambulance, but then told me that they could not help me any further and left," Rahimi recalled, explaining how he only realized how serious his injuries were after spotting blood running out from under his T-shirt during the brutal attack on Sept. 17, 2011.

Andy Eckardt / NBC News

Ilias Panagiotaros of Greece's far-right Golden Dawn Party.

Rahimi's case does not appear to be unique. As the euro zone debt crisis leaves Greece grappling with a 25 percent overall unemployment rate, activists say they have noted an increase in the number of hate crimes reported.

'It is virtually impossible to find a job': Brain drain is new Greek tragedy

Far-right populism has also found fertile ground in the near-bankrupt country,?where the economy is forecast to contract by 7 percent this year and every second youth is out of work.

Nazi-style salutes
The Golden Dawn party ? no more than an extremist fringe group when it was established in the late 1980s and which has been branded "neo-Nazi" by its opponents ? has been gaining support amid the country's deteriorating economic situation.

Citing a poll by?VPRC which appeared in the "Ellada Avrio" newspaper on Friday, Reuters reported:

Alkis Konstantinidis / EPA, file

Migrants living in Athens are held during a Police ID-check operation in central Athens, Greece, in this 6 August file picture.

Backing for the ultra-nationalist Golden Dawn, which has been linked to a rise in attacks against migrants in recent months, stood at 14 percent, double their take in June elections that gave the party a foothold in parliament. That would make the group the country's third largest party.

The party's rabidly anti-immigrant message has stuck a chord with many voters as EU/IMF imposed austerity propels unemployment levels to a record 25 percent.

Golden Dawn denies it is neo-Nazi but bears a Swastika-like emblem and its supporters have been seen giving Nazi-style salutes. The party's leader, Nikolaos Mihaloliakos, has denied the Holocaust occurred while one lawmaker, Eleni Zaroulia, called immigrants "sub-humans" in parliament on Thursday.

Reuters added that the opinion poll showed that "Greeks' frustration with their political leaders has grown as the coalition prepares to push through the new round of austerity measures to appease [foreign] lenders and secure more bailout aid and keep the country afloat."

Over the past decade, Greece has become the major gateway into the European Union for illegal immigrants and asylum-seekers from Asia and Africa.

'Growing despair'
Experts estimate that between 800,000 and 1 million undocumented migrants now live in Greece, a country with a population of nearly 11 million.

"The rapid increase of illegal immigration in the past years, growing despair over the ailing economy and a loss of trust in our political leadership have fueled public anger and given way to dangerous populism in the country," says Loukas Tsoukalis, head of Greek think-tank Eliamep.

Riot police use tear gas and stun grenades in response to fire bombs and bottles thrown by protesters during a demonstration against austerity cuts in Greece. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

Campaigning on a message of ultra-nationalism and fierce anti-immigrant policies, Golden Dawn won 18 seats in parliament during June's national election.

"We have to protect 10 million Greeks that are suffering from the very bad economy and from the killings, rapes, shootings and everything else that all illegal immigrants are doing to this country," Ilias Panagotiaros, a Golden Dawn politician and a member of Greek parliament, told NBC News.

A poll last month found that the popularity of Nikos Mihalolioakos, head of the Golden Dawn party, has climbed to 22 percent, up 8 points from May.

However, it is not just a harsh political message that has been drawing support for Golden Dawn.

In an attempt to build an image of social responsibility, followers of the movement have taken up the roles of what some Greeks call "a crumbling public support system."

'For Greeks only'
Last month, members of Golden Dawn set up booths in a central Athens square to distribute groceries and collect blood donations. "For Greeks only" was the message, after visitors were asked to provide identification of Greek citizenship.

"Golden Dawn has been taking advantage of the growing despair, presents itself as a protector of the weak and vulnerable," analyst Tsoukalis says.?"In dangerous neighborhoods they have offered to escort old ladies to the grocery store around the corner."

Rising political and socio-economic discontent, nurtured by a surge of crime rates in major Greek cities, have also led to widespread public acceptance that followers of Golden Dawn sometimes substitute for police and other government officials.

While Greece gears up for more protests against austerity cuts, the health care system is in tatters with little cash for drugs or doctors. ITV's James Mates reports.

A video shot in early September shows members of Golden Dawn checking work permits at a local market in Rafina, where migrant vendors sell their goods. Minutes later, several people with black Golden Dawn T-shirts and Greek flags moved in and destroyed the stands.

"We are going to defend our country, our history, our religion, our culture," Golden Dawn's Panagiotaros adds. He is also one of the founders of a ultra-nationalistic football fan club called?Galazia Stratia, or Blue Army, that has vowed to "defend Greek national pride inside the stadiums".

Spain's economic crisis turns middle-class families into illegal squatters

"Things are getting worse and worse in Greece. There is no future for the next few years there," says Christos Christoglou, a Greek inspection engineer, who moved to Germany to find work.

In September, Jos? Manuel Barroso, the president of the European Commission, included a stark warning in his annual 'state of the union' address, saying that the euro crisis was contributing to the rise in extremism.

And in recent months, officials in Athens have vowed to set up a special police force to combat violence against migrants and plan to impose tougher penalties for these type of crimes.

"Something must happen quick," says Judith Sunderland?from Human Rights Watch, who is author of a report called "Hate on the Streets: Xenophobic violence in Greece."??

?Xenophobic hate crimes have reached an alarming proportion in Greece," she added. "Victims are often actively discouraged from filing complaints, told by police officers that it is not worth their while or that they should fight back themselves. And many migrants fear that they could be locked up themselves because of their legal status."

'The country is on its knees': Ireland grapples with economic collapse

Meanwhile, Rahimi is still waiting for justice in the wake of his attack.?The trial has been postponed seven times already in the past year.

"And it remains unclear, whether the prosecutor will argue that the attack had been motivated by racist or xenophobic sentiment," Sunderland told NBC News.

In debt or jobless, many Italians choose suicide

One of the three accused is Themis Skordeli, a female member of Golden Dawn, who failed to get elected to parliament last May.

According to local media reports, Skordeli has been identified as a member of a so called 'anti-migrant patrol group', which was formed to 'work the streets' of poorer Athens' neighborhoods.

Rahimi, who came to Greece in 2005, says that he now rarely leaves his apartment and has become extremely cautious when going out to visit friends.

"I am afraid to live here," he says. "I will wait until the trial is over and then definitely head to another country."

Our 24-Hour Extra Life Gaming Marathon Is Complete - Game Informer

Update: Game Informer's Extra Life team has successfully completed a 24-hour video game marathon for charity.?After quickly hitting our initial goal of $8,888, we set our sights on $11,111, of which we raised $10,569. We're ecstatic that this money will be going towards Minnesota's Gillette's Children's Specialty Health Care and other hospitals in the Children's Miracle Network. Thank you for watching our livestream, playing along, and supporting us with donations. It's not too late to donate now and help us hit our goal, even after the marathon has ended.

----------------------------

Game Informer is no stranger to gaming marathons. We?ve set gaming marathon world records, for crying out loud. But this time we?re putting our raw talent to a good cause. The Game Informer community has teamed up with Extra Life to raise money for charity with a 24-hour gaming marathon.

On October 20, starting at 8:00 am central time, we?ll begin live-streaming video feed of the games we?re playing and us playing them. Some of us will be playing new, awesome releases like Resident Evil 6 or Dishonored. Others will be playing old favorites or leaving it up to our viewership to help decide.?

We also hope to incorporate some fun interactivity with anyone watching the marathon. Some ideas include rewarding big donators with the power to choose what game we play (anything but Overblood, please). Will you be kind, allowing us to play fantastic games current or past, or will you be cruel and subject us to broken, horrid video games? Our fate could be in your hands. Editor Ben Reeves, intern Jack Gardner, video editor Jason Oestreicher, and myself may also be competing in tournaments and speed runs against one another. We just plan on having a good time playing some awesome games. Other Game Informer staff may be joining our Extra Life team leading up to the marathon.

Speaking of teaming up, you can join team Game Informer Online and help us raise money for a cause. We?d love for you to join us on our 24-hour marathon in spirit, and you also have the chance to win some prizes by signing up, getting others to sign up, and donating money. Check out Noobtubin8r?s blog post for more information or head over to the team forums and look at the prize thread.

Check out the video below to get an idea for what your time and contributions will be supporting:

Minnesota?s Gillette Children?s Hospital is one such hospital, which the Game Informer staff participating in the Extra Life marathon will be sponsoring. Gillette and Game Informer will be working closely together leading up to the marathon in order to raise awareness and come up with some cool free stuff to give away to viewers.

So far Team GIO has raised $2,434 out of the $4.444 goal. Hopefully, with your support, we will reach that goal. When we do, we?ll raise it even further to net as much cash as we can for these hospitals.
