ST. AUGUSTINE ? The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has cleared a retired St. Augustine Beach police chief accused of taking firearms, a mountain bike and a motorcycle.
Richard Hedges already was cleared of ethics violations. The FDLE investigation focused on allegations made by Hedges' patrol officers.
Hedges told The Florida Times-Union (http://bit.ly/MU9c3s ) that the ethical and criminal charges had all been unfounded. He announced his retirement June 4.
The FDLE said the firearms the patrol officers accused Hedges of taking were secure in a weapons locker the whole time.
State investigators also found that the date when the mountain bike was reported missing was unclear. They also found that there was no evidence that Hedges knew what happened to the missing motorcycle that was stored as recovered property before he became chief.
