Recall News

The following recalls have been announced:

OUTDOOR FIREPLACES

DETAILS: Catalina Outdoor Fireplace, a freestanding structure made of glass and black metal, about 30 inches tall with a square, vented top lid. The fireplaces sold for about $130 at Christmas Tree Shops retail locations from September 2011 to October 2012. They are manufactured in China, and imported by Nantucket Distributing Co., Inc. of Middleboro, Mass. Consumers are urged to stop using the fireplace and return it to any Christmas Tree Shops store for a full refund.

WHY: The glass components of the fireplace can break when a fire is lit, creating a burn and laceration hazard.

INCIDENTS: Christmas Tree Shops received three reports of the glass component breaking; no injuries have been reported.

HOW MANY: About 2,000

FOR MORE: Contact Christmas Tree Shops toll-free at (888) 287-3232 any time, or online at www.christmastreeshops.com and go to the link Safety and Recalls at the bottom left of the page.

WASHING MACHINES

DETAILS: Three LG and three Kenmore Elite Brand top-loading washing machine models, manufactured between February 2010 and November 2011. The units come in beige, white and graphite steel. The LG models were sold at Best Buy, Home Depot, Kmart and Sears, as well as local retailers nationwide; the Kenmore Elite models were sold at Kmart and Sears. The units sold for $899 to $1,099, from April 2010 to December 2012. They were manufactured in South Korea.

WHY: An unbalanced load can cause the washing machine to shake excessively and the drum to come loose, leading to risks of injury and property damage. Consumers should contact LG or Sears for a free in-home repair of the machine, and should be aware that loading their machines with water-proof or water-resistant items, such as mattress pads, mattress covers and similar items, increases the chances of loads being unbalanced.

INCIDENTS: LG has received at least 343 reports of excessive vibrating by washing machines, more than half of which involved minor property damage. One minor injury was reported.

HOW MANY: About 457,000

FOR MORE: For LG, call toll-free at (855) 400-4639, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST Monday through Friday, or 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. EST Saturday, or online at www.lg.com/us and click on Public Notices at the bottom of the page. For Kenmore or LG washers purchased at Sears or Kmart; toll-free at (888) 812-2935, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST Monday through Friday, or from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. EST Saturday, or online at www.sears.com and click on Customer Service at the top of the page, Product Recalls in the Product Information section.

BICYCLES

DETAILS: 2011 Havoc 24-inch and 26-inch bicycles. The 24-inch bikes were sold in semi-matte gray, and the 26-inch bikes in semi-matte red. They are manufactured by Norco Bicycles, a division of LTP Sports Group Inc., of Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada. They were sold at authorized Norco dealers nationwide from November 2010 to September 2011, for about $600. They were manufactured in China.

WHY: The bicycle frame can crack at the joint where the top tube meets the down tube. A cracked tube can separate and cause the rider to lose control, leading to risk of injury or death. Consumers should stop using the bike and return it to an authorized Norco dealer for a replacement.

INCIDENTS: The firm has received three reports of cracked frames; no injuries have been reported.

HOW MANY: About 90

FOR MORE: Consumers can visit the firm's website at www.norco.com and click on Safety and Recall at the bottom of the page for more information.

Bicycles purchased before January 2012 are not included in this recall. The bikes were manufactured in China and imported by Wilier Triestina USA LLC, of Atlanta.

WHY: The bike fork's steerer tube can break while in use, posing a danger of falling. Consumers should stop using the bike and have an authorized Wilier bicycle dealer check for the serial number on the fork and, if it is included in the recall, install a new Izoard replacement fork at no charge.
