Box Office Guru Wrapup: Hobbit Threepeats, Western & Musical Rock

For a third consecutive frame, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey led the North American box office but this time was joined by a trio of new releases opening on Christmas Day which filled up the next spots on the charts over a red hot final weekend of 2012.

Smashing through the $200M barrier, The Hobbit collected an estimated $32.9M in its third journey pushing the 17-day cume up to a sizable $222.7M. Warner Bros. enjoyed a slim 11% decline and fared very well during this past Christmas week. Finishing with $290M seems very likely while reaching the $300M mark remains a possibility as well. Hobbit should surpass $700M globally before the start of 2013.

Quentin Tarantino enjoyed the biggest debut of his career with his latest film Django Unchained which took in an estimated $30.7M over the weekend and a superb $64M in the six days since its Christmas Day launch on Tuesday. That's already bigger than his old career best opening week (first seven days) of $53.7M for his last film Inglourious Basterds which debuted on a summer Friday in 2009.

The slave Western starring Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, and Leonardo DiCaprio averaged a strong $10,195 from 3,010 locations making for the best average of any wide release. That is especially impressive for an R-rated film that runs nearly three hours long. Controversy related to Django's language and violence resulted in extra press coverage and more buzz and multiplexes enjoyed the benefits.

The Weinstein Co. is positioning the revenge film as both an awards contender and a commercial blockbuster and so far is succeeding on both fronts. Reviews have been very positive and the CinemaScore grade was an encouraging A-. Django Unchained already seems on track to beat the $120.5M of Basterds to become Tarantino's highest grossing film ever.

Finishing close behind in third place was the acclaimed musical Les Miserables with an estimated $28M over the Friday-to-Sunday period and a sturdy $67.4M since its Christmas launch. The Universal release averaged a terrific $9,960 from only 2,814 locations and is aiming for a long run ahead thanks to excellent word-of-mouth and upcoming awards activity including Oscar nominations and Golden Globe wins which are expected.

The Hugh Jackman-led film started off with the second best Christmas Day opening in history with $18.2M on Tuesday trailing only the $24.6M Friday of Sherlock Holmes in 2009. Compared to Django, Les Miserables has seen more erosion over the six-day launch period. But since it is based on a world-famous musical, the run was expected to have a big upfront showing of die-hard fans. Studio exit polls showed that the audience was 67% female with the overall CinemaScore being a glowing A grade.

Produced for $61M, the PG-13 film enjoyed international success too with $38.3M this weekend from only eight markets, mostly in the Pacific Rim, for a $48.7M cume and $116.2M worldwide total so far with plenty more to come. Korea accounts for nearly half of the overseas tally with a sensational $20.1M beating the opening of The Hobbit.

Opening in fourth place was the Billy Crystal-Bette Midler family comedy Parental Guidance with $14.8M and $29.6M since its Christmas Day bow. The PG-rated pic about grandparents having to care for their modern grandkids averaged a moderate $4,396 over the weekend period. With few clean options this holiday season that the whole family can enjoy together, Guidance connected with its target audience and will now try to keep it going through January when direct competition will still be light. Fox's $25M production played to a crowd that was 52% female and 55% over 25. Reviews were lousy.

Tom Cruise dropped down to fifth place with his latest action entry Jack Reacher which dipped a reasonable 10% to an estimated $14M pushing the ten-day total up to $44.7M for Paramount. Judd Apatow's new comedy This is 40 climbed up 14% from last weekend and grossed an estimated $13.2M for a ten-day take of $37.1M. The Paul Rudd-Leslie Mann pic picked up steam after Christmas once its target audience became more available, however the Universal title still sits far behind the $65.9M that Knocked Up grossed in its first ten days in 2007.

Moviegoers with extra time on their hands caught up with one of the hottest Oscar hopefuls out there, Steven Spielberg's Lincoln. The Daniel Day-Lewis starrer surged 36% from last weekend - the best jump in the top ten - and took in an estimated $7.5M bumping the cume up to a sturdy $132M for Disney. The Republican president has been cleaning up at the box office and has plenty of firepower left especially with the expected boatload of Oscar nominations coming in less than two weeks. Lincoln is now the top-grossing drama of 2012. Another older-skewing film that saw sales climb from last weekend was the Barbra Streisand comedy The Guilt Trip which banked an estimated $6.7M, up 24% from its disappointing debut. The Paramount title has collected only $21.1M in 12 days.

Animated films rounded out the top ten. Disney's 3D re-release of Monsters, Inc. shot up 33% and grossed an estimated $6.4M for $18.5M after 12 days. The Pixar hit's lifetime total now stands at $274.4M. Rival DreamWorks Animation suffered a 17% decline for its holiday adventure Rise of the Guardians which did an estimated $4.9M upping the cume to $90.2M. Studios missed out on a major opportunity by not releasing any major new toons this Christmas.

The James Bond cash cow Skyfall fell from the top ten in its eighth round, however it reached a key milestone by breaking the $1 billion barrier in worldwide box office. Sony's spy actioner captured an estimated $4.6M domestically, off a scant 2%, raising its sum to an incredible $289.6M. Overseas, Daniel Craig and company took in $10.3M boosting the hefty international tally to $710.6M and the worldwide haul to a cool $1B. In the U.K, Skyfall has become the top-grossing film of all-time and the first blockbuster ever to cross the ?100M mark.

The Weinstein Co. went fully nationwide with its awards contender Silver Linings Playbook widening the seven-week old comedy from 371 to 745 locations and made an estimated $4.1M for a $5,517 average - commendable for a film this old. The average was higher than last weekend's despite the expansion which indicates that audiences are still interested in the Bradley Cooper-Jennifer Lawrence pic regardless of the flood of other Oscar hopefuls out there. Cume to date is $27.4M.

The acclaimed Osama bin Laden manhunt pic Zero Dark Thirty suffered a 23% drop from its red hot debut last weekend which was unusual for a holiday frame when moviegoers are more available. Still, Sony's Kathryn Bigelow-directed thriller averaged a sensational $63,000 from only five theaters in New York and Los Angeles. Zero expands to more cities on Friday including San Francisco, Chicago, and Boston and goes nationwide on January 11, one day after Oscar nominations are announced.

Lacking awards buzz, Matt Damon's new film Promised Land attracted a mild debut in limited release grossing an estimated $190,150 from 25 locations for a $7,606 average. Focus plans to expand nationwide on Friday into an aggressive 1,500 theaters which will be challenging given the opening weekend performance and the fact that rival arthouse pic The Impossible - which has earned better reviews and stronger box office - also goes wide on the same day. Reviews have been mixed for Promised Land.

The top ten films grossed an estimated $159.1M which was up 18% from last year when Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol was number one with $29.4M; and up 16% from 2010 when Little Fockers remained in the top spot with $25.8M.

Potential heir to $300 million fortune found dead

A long-lost relative of the reclusive heiress Huguette Clark, who could have inherited $19 million of her $300 million fortune, has been found dead under a Union Pacific Railroad overpass in Wyoming.

Children sledding found the body of Timothy Henry Gray, 60, Thursday afternoon in Evanston, a small mining town in southwestern Wyoming near the Utah border. The coroner said it appeared he died of hypothermia. The low temperature that day was 10 degrees, and had hit zero in the previous week. Lt. Bill Jeffers of the Evanston Police Department said there was no evidence of foul play, and Gray was wearing a light jacket. Gray's siblings said they hadn't heard from him since their?mother's funeral in 1990, when he disappeared without a word.??It wasn't clear whether Gray was living under the overpass, where transients have been known to camp.

Tim Gray was an adopted great-grandson of former U.S. Sen. William Andrews Clark, known as one of the copper kings of Montana, a banker, a builder of railroads and the founder of Las Vegas. The senator's youngest daughter, Huguette Clark, was a recluse who died in 2011 in New York City at age 104, after living in hospitals for 20 years while her palatial homes sat unused. Gray was her half great-nephew.

In her will, Huguette Clark left no money at all to her family, leaving it instead to?her nurse, goddaughter, attorney, accountant, hospital, doctor, favorite museum and various employees, as well as? to an art foundation to be set up at her oceanfront estate in Santa Barbara, Calif. ?None of her relatives had seen Clark in at least 40 years, though some had been in touch with her through holiday cards and occasional phone calls.

Nineteen of Clark's relatives have stepped forward to challenge her will in a New York court. A public administrator joined the challenge on behalf of Gray. When lawyers tried to find him to let him know about the Clark estate battle, they found his belongings had been abandoned in a storage locker, according to court records, and private investigators were not able to find him.

If the relatives win their court challenge, Gray's estate would be entitled to about $19 million before taxes, or 6.25 percent of Clark's copper mining fortune, which has been conservatively estimated at $307 million by the administrator of Huguette Clark's estate. If Gray, who apparently had no spouse or children, died without a will, his siblings would receive his share in addition to their own.

Gray was not using the money he already had. The coroner said Gray's wallet contained a cashier's check, from 2003, for "a significant amount."

Gray's older brother, Jerry, said Tim had worked as a cowboy and lived in the Rocky Mountain states.?"He was homeless essentially. If we had proper mental health services in this country, we could have been notified and known to do something."

Huguette Clark attracted the attention of NBC News in 2009 because of her vacant but well-manicured mansions and questions about the management of her money. The battle over her estate could go before a jury in 2013, though settlement talks have begun.

Sen Graham Exposes Republican Debt Lie by Attacking Social Security

more from Sarah Jones

sen graham

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) was on Fox News Sunday this morning proving to America that he doesn?t really care about the debt problem at all, he just wants to appease his hatred for misnamed ?entitlement? programs like Social Security.

Graham insists that we must raise the age for Social Security in order to deal with the debt problem, but the Social Security Trust Fund has nothing to do with the deficit, and even former President Reagan knew this.

Here?s Senator Graham on Fox this morning courtesy of Think Progress:

Graham said, ?I?m not going to raise the debt ceiling unless we get serious about keeping the country from becoming Greece, saving Social Security and Medicare [sic]. So here?s what I would like: meaningful entitlement reform ? not to turn Social Security into private accounts, not to take a voucher approach to Medicare ? but, adjust the age for Social Security, CPI changes and means testing and look beyond the ten-year window. I cannot in good conscience raise the debt ceiling without addressing the long term debt problems of this country and I will not.?

Graham is saying that Republicans will bring their ?entitlement? grievances to the debt ceiling fight in order to address long term debt. So, he is just pretending to care about deficit reduction and clinging to raising the age for Social Security as a way to get there, unless he?s really unaware of how the Social Security Trust Fund operates. It is funded by payroll taxes. We pay into it our entire working lives in order to have it later. It?s not here to fund reckless spending or wars.

A refresher for the Senator from way back in 1984, when Republican idol President Ronald Reagan explained to the math impaired, ?Social security has nothing to do with the deficit.?

Reagan said, ?Social Security, let?s lay it to rest once and for all? Social security has nothing to do with the deficit. Social Security is totally funded by the payroll tax levied on employer and employee. If you reduce the outgo of Social Security, that money would not go into the general fund or reduce the deficit. It would go into the Social Security Trust Fund. So Social Security has nothing to do with balancing a budget or raising or lowering the deficit.?

The national debt is the net accumulated borrowing by the federal government. The federal budget deficit is the amount that our federal government borrows each year, based on the difference between what we generate in revenue (e.g., taxes) and spending. Each year?s deficit is then added to the existing debt. Thus, since Social Security has nothing to do with the deficit, it also has nothing to do with the accumulation of deficits, known as debt.

If Senator Graham is so concerned about our debt, why doesn?t he start by addressing the Republican unfunded entitlement Medicare Part D first? Dan Gross explained that it is the ?Republican-designed Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit that threatens to explode entitlement costs, by as much as $1 trillion in 10 years.? You see, Republicans left Medicare Part D unfunded and also left it up to the private sector insurance companies to charge what they wished for the drugs rather than force competition to do its thing.

Yet Senator Graham says he won?t move unless the Social Security age is raised because ?I cannot in good conscience raise the debt ceiling without addressing the long term debt problems of this country and I will not.? How is raising the Social Security age going to address the ?long term debt problem? of this country?

Where was Graham?s worried conscience when Cheney told us, ?Deficits don?t matter? and former President Bush governed accordingly? If Graham really cared so much about the ?long term debt? problem, he might have spoken up when under Bush taxes were lowered while starting two unfunded wars, which were also left off of the budget at the time. President Obama initiated some honest accounting by adding those bills to our debt. Those deficits (lowering revenue while increasing spending and borrowing to cover the difference) accumulated up over time, and are a significant part of the debt problem. Wars are expensive.

Now that those credit card bills are due, Graham and Republicans want to force Seniors to pay the bill, only cutting Social Security would not even go to the deficit. In other words, this argument works on the misinformed, but it?s a shell game. The argument over whether or not Social Security needs to be reformed doesn?t belong in a fight over the debt ceiling. Let Senator Graham make this argument in a situation where he?s not holding the country hostage over an unrelated matter.

Senator Graham has exposed his argument as the craven lie it is. He doesn?t give a hoot about debt. What he cares about is using every single Republican-created crisis as a justification to destroy the social safety net, even when the programs he takes aim at are unrelated to our deficit.

FBI removes many redactions in Marilyn Monroe file

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? FBI files on Marilyn Monroe that could not be located earlier this year have been found and re-issued, revealing the names of some of the movie star's acquaintances who drew concern from government officials and her own entourage.

The files had previously been heavily redacted, but more details are now public in a version of the file recently obtained by The Associated Press through the Freedom of Information Act. The updated files reveal that some in Monroe's inner circle were concerned about her association with Frederick Vanderbilt Field, who was disinherited from his wealthy family over his leftist views.

The FBI's files on Monroe show the extent the agency was monitoring the actress for ties to communism in the years before her death in August 1962. A trip to Mexico earlier that year to shop for furniture brought her in contact with Field, who was living in the country with his wife in self-imposed exile. Informants reported to the FBI that a "mutual infatuation" had developed between Field and Monroe, which caused concern among some in her inner circle, including her therapist, the files state.

"This situation caused considerable dismay among Miss Monroe's entourage and also among the (American Communist Group in Mexico)," the file states. It includes references to an interior decorator who worked with Monroe's analyst reporting her connection to Field to the doctor.

Field's autobiography devotes an entire chapter to Monroe's Mexico trip, "An Indian Summer Interlude." He mentions that he and his wife accompanied Monroe on shopping trips and meals and he only mentions politics once in a passage on their dinnertime conversations.

"She talked mostly about herself and some of the people who had been or still were important to her," Field wrote in "From Right to Left." ''She told us about her strong feelings for civil rights, for black equality, as well as her admiration for what was being done in China, her anger at red-baiting and McCarthyism and her hatred of (FBI director) J. Edgar Hoover."

Under Hoover's watch, the FBI kept tabs on the political and social lives of many celebrities, including Frank Sinatra, Charlie Chaplin and Monroe's ex-husband Arthur Miller. The bureau has also been involved in numerous investigations about crimes against celebrities, including threats against Elizabeth Taylor, an extortion case involving Clark Gable and more recently, trying to solve who killed rapper Notorious B.I.G.

The AP had sought the removal of redactions from Monroe's FBI files earlier this year as part of a series of stories on the 50th anniversary of Monroe's death. The FBI had reported that it had transferred the files to a National Archives facility in Maryland, but archivists said the documents had not been received. A few months after requesting details on the transfer, the FBI released an updated version of the files that eliminate dozens of redactions.

For years, the files have intrigued investigators, biographers and those who don't believe Monroe's death at her Los Angeles area home was a suicide.

A 1982 investigation by the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office found no evidence of foul play after reviewing all available investigative records, but noted that the FBI files were "heavily censored."

That characterization intrigued the man who performed Monroe's autopsy, Dr. Thomas Noguchi. While the DA investigation concluded he conducted a thorough autopsy, Noguchi has conceded that no one will likely ever know all the details of Monroe's death. The FBI files and confidential interviews conducted with the actress' friends that have never been made public might help, he wrote in his 1983 memoir "Coroner."

"On the basis of my own involvement in the case, beginning with the autopsy, I would call Monroe's suicide 'very probable,'" Noguchi wrote. "But I also believe that until the complete FBI files are made public and the notes and interviews of the suicide panel released, controversy will continue to swirl around her death."

Monroe's file begins in 1955 and mostly focuses on her travels and associations, searching for signs of leftist views and possible ties to communism. One entry, which previously had been almost completely redacted, concerned intelligence that Monroe and other entertainers sought visas to visit Russia that year.

The file continues up until the months before her death, and also includes several news stories and references to Norman Mailer's biography of the actress, which focused on questions about whether Monroe was killed by the government.

For all the focus on Monroe's closeness to suspected communists, the bureau never found any proof she was a member of the party.

"Subject's views are very positively and concisely leftist; however, if she is being actively used by the Communist Party, it is not general knowledge among those working with the movement in Los Angeles," a July 1962 entry in Monroe's file states.

Fireworks warehouse in Nigeria explodes, killing 1

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? A massive explosion ripped through a warehouse full of fireworks in Nigeria's largest city on Wednesday, sparking a fire that threatened surrounding city blocks and sending a plume of thick smoke high into the sky. At least one person died and 15 others were wounded, emergency officials said.

The blast occurred around 9 a.m. in the Jankara area of Lagos Island, a neighborhood of narrow streets and tall cement buildings holding shops and housing people sometimes a dozen to a room in the megacity of Lagos. The force of the explosion echoed miles away and shook windows.

An Associated Press journalist saw members of the Nigerian Red Cross treating people with minor cuts and bruises a few blocks from the site. Later, rescuers pulled out a badly charred corpse from the still-smoldering structure.

Many people were injured when they stampeded through the area's narrow alleyways, said Yushau Shuaib, a spokesman for Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency.

"The explosion was not suspected to be a deliberate attack to cause confusion as security agencies have commenced their investigations," Shuaib said in a statement later Wednesday.

Casualties, however, could rise as rescuers continue to clear debris from the fire. Smoke still rose over the neighborhood as the sun started to set Wednesday over Lagos.

Rubble-strewn streets surrounding the burning buildings were covered in the spent shells of fireworks. Several police officers and security officials found large, mortar-like fireworks in the building, the kind wired to explode as part of a large arrangement put on by professionals.

Nigerians commonly shoot off fireworks and firecrackers to mark Christmas and the New Year, with hawkers roaming in traffic with fistfuls of the small explosives to sell to passing drivers.

Local government officials have tried to ban fireworks this year, in part due to safety and in part due to the fear they can cause in a nation where a radical Islamist sect is carrying out shootings and car bombings. Nevertheless fireworks have exploded across the country in recent days to mark the holiday season.

Immediately after the blast Wednesday, thousands quickly filled the streets surrounding the burning buildings. Others ran away as fireworks continued to explode inside. A half-dozen firefighters arrived at the scene with two trucks and locals also ran fire hoses from the trucks to nearby buildings to try to beat back the flames.

The trucks quickly ran out of water. One man even scooped up water from a puddle with a bowl in an attempt to fight the blaze. One firefighter briefly fought with a young man who took his firefighting helmet off his head and ran away into the swarming crowd. The firefighter shrugged and went back to his truck as the building continued to burn.

Reader Survey 2012 - Portland Food and Drink

Toro Bravo Portland

Toro BravoRadicchio salad with green olive toast & manchego vinaigrette

1. Toro Bravo -?Everyday Spanish food is about quality and fresh ingredients, simply prepared. This is rustic food, meant for downing as tapas and accompaniments to glasses of Spanish Rosado or pitchers of Sangria. This is food to relax over, to nibble at, and to share with friends.

The Toro Bravo menu starts with pinchos, which are ?little bites.? These are as simple as a bowl of salted almonds, or a Spanish ?amuse bouche? of ?French kisses? ? brandy soaked prunes, stuffed with foie gras, together wonderfully creamy, slightly sweet. Think about substituting them for a dessert. Another winner, griddled bacon-wrapped dates with warm honey. The result is complex, with the sweetness of the smoky dates, the meaty rich flavor of the bacon still tasting of the grill, and the warm honey, all combining to?transport anyone who is familiar with the region right back to a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean.?Lamb rillets with apricots and honey showcase the Moorish influence on parts of the country like Seville and Granada. They arrive steaming hot in a Cazuela dish, a traditional thick ceramic which is built to insulate food. Another satisfying dish is the lamb ? a succulent small skewer of kebobs grilled Southern Spanish style with a cumin paste, and perfect at medium rare. It?s a small portion, but very good; they hit the mark on this one. Boquerones, fresh marinated anchovies are loved throughout Spain, and Toro Bravo?s version, served with piperade on thin slices of crostini are a highlight ? fresh and bright, the anchovies draped alluringly over the bread, giving the slightest taste of the sea, with layers of satisfying textures and tastes wrapping around each other.

I once dated a woman from Peru, who decided it was her calling in life to teach me the mysteries of making good empanada. It?s an art keeping the dough thin enough to cradle the ingredients inside, without getting in the way of their flavor; try as I might, I never could get mine quite right. At Toro Bravo, they are perfect little pouches that fall away with the slightest crunch of teeth, revealing an unctuous, complex filling of lamb, mint and harissa. Don?t miss them

Pok Pok Portland

Pok Pok

2. Pok Pok -?Crispy, crackly chicken skin gave gently under my teeth releasing a flavor somewhat reminiscent of the time I rode my tricycle into a lemon geranium bush. I was eating roasted game hen, just one of the signature dishes on the Pok Pok menu.?Eating here will surprise those used to more Americanized Thai food, and I can?t think of any single dish that?s composed the same way in other Portland restaurants. Keep an open mind, and be prepared for a learning experience; it?s worth your time.

Owner Andy Ricker has been so successful with Pok Pok, he?s opened Pok Pok Noi in NE Portland, and two branches in New York City; while keeping up the quality of the food in the original restaurant. I?ve had so many excellent meals here it would be difficult to describe them all. Khao Soi, a wonderfully healing Northern Thai curry noodle soup with house-made curry paste and house-pressed coconut milk. Yam Khai Dao made with crispy fried farm eggs, lettuce, and a melange of vegetables and Thai chilies, finished with lime, fish sauce and palm sugar dressing. Hoi Thawt, made with a crispy crepe, steamed fresh mussels, eggs, garlic chives and bean sprouts, topped with Shark Sri Racha sauce. The list goes on;?Neua Naam tok is back for summer; a spicy and sour grilled marinated flank steak salad with ground dry-roasted chilies, lemongrass, fresh shallots, toasted rice powder, fish sauce, lime juice and mint. A classic salad, on the nose it?s a panoply of fragrant, harmonious ingredients?- strips of juicy steak, rice powder for crunchy texture, and all the other ingredients playing off one another in contrasting bursts.?Ike?s Vietnamese Fish Sauce Wings are legendary among Pok Pok fans. The fresh wings are marinated in fish sauce and palm sugar, deep fried and tossed in caramelized fish sauce and garlic ? crunchy, salty, and loaded with flavor.?Truly this is a wonderful restaurant; I?ve rarely had a dish here that was flawed in execution. Be prepared for a line; put your name on the list and drop into their bar, the Whiskey Soda lounge down the street, while you wait for your table. Even better, drop by for lunch when there is rarely a wait, though the menu is smaller.?My full review

3. Paley?s Place?-?A restaurant is like an art piece. The way you are greeted, your dining companions, the smells from the kitchen, feel of the menu in your hands, lighting, music, sounds, service and finally the food. Everything works together to paint a picture. On a good night, walking into Paley?s Place can be like walking into a Matisse. A?classic Portland restaurant, Vitaly and Kimberly Paley?s restaurant was one of the first in Portland to serve exceptionally fine food.

Meals begin with an amuse bouche, recently a fine gazpacho of cucumbers, sherry vinegar, garlic and olive oil. The overall effect was the puckering of the jowls and salivating for more ? a wake-up indeed.?The braised lamb terrine is rich and flavorful, a mosaic of textures. The same goes for a terrine combining pork tenderloin, chicken liver and porcini. Salmon pastrami is paper-thin, dressed with cr?me fra?che and wonderful fresh dill on grilled, slightly blackened rye, crispy edges of the bread giving it texture. Prosciutto cotto draped across a plate is mild in flavor, smooth and almost creamy, with a dusting of finely chopped hazelnuts giving a wonderful balance to the fat.

Mediterranean blue mussels are served in a large bowl with a simmering buttery broth flavored with white wine. A dash of persillade over the top adds color and an extra layer of depth. The bivalves are large and silky, crunchy bread is on the side to sop up the leftover broth. The bowl is accompanied by irresistible fries that are fresh and crisp, and an excellent aioli which gets a slight kick from a hint of mustard and garlic.

Paley?s is known for a traditional ?escargot a la Bordelaise?, or snails with roasted marrow bones. It?s rich; made with red wine, marrow, shallots and demi-glace. Vitaly?s version is impeccable: a master class on a plate. When served with rich marrow bones surrounded by garlicky plump escargot and sweet roasted garlic, the combination is robust and earthy. A plate containing crackly grilled brioche, persillade and sea salt is served on the side. Use the little fork to dig the marrow out of the center of the bones, and dip the accompanying brioche in the sauce. Close your eyes and you?ll be transported to France.

Order a small portion of sweetbreads, served nestled with a little pile of forest mushrooms, a bit of nutty sp?tzle and a wonderful kidney-mustard sauce. The sweetbreads are crisp and creamy; when combined with the rich sauce, they hit in a rush of earthy flavors. Paley?s Place is always on Portland best restaurant lists, and was my Restaurant of the Year in 2010.?My review

Tasty n Sons

Tasty n Sons Burger

4. Tasty N Sons -?Owned by John Gorham of Toro Bravo ? our number one 2011 and 2012 readers choice, the menu at Tasty N Sons is tinged with influences not only from Spain, but from the entire?Mediterranean.??Though they are open for lunch and dinner too, the breakfast menu quickly became legendary, drawing lines every day of the week. The griddled bacon-wrapped dates come with a light shower of warm maple syrup. More traditional items soar above the competition.?The toast & jam is wonderful; thick soft bread, teleme cheese, and a smear of jam pairs nicely as a side to any of the larger plates. The same can be said for Erin?s sweet biscuits with warm berry compote, or?house-made?granola with marionberries, kicked up with sweetened lebneh, a soft cheese made from Greek yogurt.

Spicy North African sausages are laid over a bed of couscous which is loaded with little bits of dried fruit,? and cauliflower. An accompanying over-easy egg draped across the top, runs over everything, pulling it all together. Try the pork cutlets with fried egg and sauteed spinach, or the Libyan shakshuka, red pepper and tomato stew with baked eggs. At night, the line forms for choices like quajado, a ?Mediterranean Jewish frittata, pork shank adobo, grilled quail with couscous and Merguez sausage, or the nueve cocktail with octopus, prawns and flat bread. The ?pretty damn good chicken strips? are?the best?I?ve?ever had. They are moist and tender, lightly breaded, piping hot with strong chicken flavor; not greasy at all. They arrive draped across a mound of fries and a good dipping sauce. I get them every time I go to happy hour.

Tasty & Sons has a full liquor license, so a list of ?breakfast cocktails? is available, including at least four versions of bloody Mary?s; most of which are an interesting departure from the norm. Two examples, the dimsomore: Monopolowa vodka, tomato, hoisin, lime, sriracha, ginger, and the Tasty Mary: Monopolowa vodka, tomato, Worcestershire, horse-radish, lemon, sriracha, celery and house pickles with a salted rim. I love them ? balanced, spicy, and just enough booze to send you home for an hour of napping. Service is excellent ? attentive and knowledgeable; they make you feel welcome and cared for, though be prepared; the food is served family-style, and dishes may not come to the table in the order you expect.

Overall, Tasty & Sons has an interesting menu, quality food, and is one of my favorite restaurants in Portland. Try an assortment of dishes and share with a few friends.?It tends to provoke strong feelings from diners; they either love it or walk away disappointed, but the lines don?t lie. It has quickly become one of my favorite restaurants in Portland.

Andina

Andina

5. Andina ? My restaurant of the year in 2009, Andina is a restaurant that rarely disappoints, always intrigues and provides a great introduction to Peruvian food, one of the world?s great cuisines. After years of accolades, it would be easy for them to coast on their reputation, but it is obvious that they are always trying to reinvent themselves, offering challenging versions of traditional dishes with their modern NovoAndina cuisine. The servings are a dazzling parade of color, from deep purple potatoes to the brilliant yellows of passion fruit, all dancing across the plates like an artists? palette.

Eating here is an adventure of flavors and combinations you might not expect.?Peruvian food is strongly influenced by both Spanish and Chinese cooking, as well as that of other nations. This can make for an interesting array of choices to pick from, with something for everyone. While you read the menu, try one of the native drinks, such as a pisco sour with its perfect egg white and bitters island over Don Cesar pisco liquor, or a darkly sweet caipirinha loaded with an intriguing combination of flavors from cahaca sugar cane liquor and lime.?Another interesting cocktail is the Sacsayhuam?n, named after the walled complex near the old city of Cusco in southeastern Peru: habanero pepper infused vodka shaken with passion fruit puree and cane sugar, served up with a sugar rim and a cilantro leaf garnish.

Some standouts: the tortilla de patata y alioli de aj? amarillo, a Spanish-style potato fritatta or tortillia, with aj? amarillo aioli. The tortilla features wonderful, light fluffy layers of potato with a slightly spicy depth; it?s just terrific. While many green salads can be rather boring, the Andina ensalada verde Peruana, made up of fresh greens topped with hearts of palm and whatever vegetables are in season, is terrific ? large for the price, dressed in a balanced vinaigrette, the little seeds, palm hearts, and vegetables all giving an interesting interplay of textures. The small is easily enough for two to share. During the spring and early summer, try the esparragos Peruanos, fresh grilled asparagus brushed with olive oil and grilled for a nice smoky flavor. It is simple and unfussy, making any asparagus lover happy.?This part of the world is known for cebiches, a traditional Peruvian dish, where raw foods are ?cooked? in key lime juice with onions, cilantro, hot peppers and salt. As is traditional in Peru, they are served with cusco corn kernels, slices ofcamote?(yam), and pieces of?cancha?(crispy corn nuggets) They have six seafood versions and another four vegetarian versions. I?ve tried the pescado five elementos which changes depending on the catch of the day, and the mixto chorrillano mixed seafood and fish with celery, ginger, and garlic. Both are very good, the fresh fish leaving a firm texture and an almost Thai-like interplay among the flavors.

The entr?es are universally large; I always end up taking some home. Food from Peru is heavy on beef and seafood, so you?ll find a large amount of both on the menus.?Some examples are lomo saltado con yuca y arroz, which is tender strips of beef, wok-fried with onions, tomatoes, soy, garlic, and aj? , served with rice and fried yuca. It is flavorful and shows the strong influence of Asian cuisine on Peru. Another dish that sometimes appears is entrec?te a la pimienta molle, a tender sirloin paired with purple potatoes, black quinoa, green beans, wild mushrooms and a molle pepper sauce. This is one of my favorite beef dishes in Portland; really tender with loads of beef flavor, cooked exactly as ordered. Another beef dish, bistec a la Peruana con humita verde, a marinated Cascade Natural rib-eye steak with huacatay butter is equally good. The meat is accompanied by a steamed corn husk ?humita? a Native American dish from pre-Hispanic times, and a traditional food in Peru. It consists of masa harina and corn, which is slowly cooked in oil. Andina?s chef stuffs it with a fresh corn puree, asparagus, wild mushrooms, and cipollini onions.

The food at Andina rarely fails to impress. The scene is warm and trendy, the food beautiful to look at and overall very good. They want to inspire passion for the food and an interest in the country, and I?d say they have succeeded. This restaurant is on my recommended list, and a must-visit for guests from out-of-town.

6. Le Pigeon ? since the day they opened, owner Gabriel Rucker?s Le Pigeon has been on Portland?s must visit list. The restaurant is a quaint and charming, a place you?ll be equally comfortable taking a few friends, or a romantic date. The menu items rotate frequently, but in most cases everything is a masterful balance of flavors. A few nights ago, a starter of grilled pork cheek, feta creamed chard and Greek salad made a perfect foil to a hot evening. Another warm night a Mediterranean appetizer of rabbit spanakopita with peaches, prosciutto and black truffles. In June, I ordered a lobster and chicken tart with vinegar ice cream. Yes, you read that right, and it was amazing.

Menu choices vary so frequently you never know what will be available, but Foie gras is always on the menu, currently served with spinach-artichoke dip and green peppercorns. Another constant,?the beef cheek Bourguignon over mashed potatoes and onions ? earthy and warming on a winter day. Chicken and oysters is a dish that I first read about in the 1918 Fannie Farmer cookbook, at Le Pigeon they are an inspired combination, served with liver, salsify and lemon jam, as were sweetbreads with pickled strawberries; perfectly crisp, yet creamy inside, the sweetness of the strawberries singing a soft harmony. A cucumber gazpacho is beautiful and refreshing, a green soup that tastes of summer, with a single perfectly grilled prawn in the middle. A dish of squab is so rich you might think it is duck, until you remember it?s matched with duck fat-poached potatoes and marrow crostini.

Even the desserts can be stunning. Take, for instance, the bizarre sounding dish of sweet cornbread with apricots, topped with crispy bacon, honey, and maple ice cream.?I?ve?had it twice, and both times we sat there saying, ?I can?t believe this is so good!? Foie gras always seems to be on the dessert menu: foie gras profiterols over salted caramel; savory and earthy, with the caramel providing salt and sweet, foie gras ice cream and bread pudding with apricot syrup, or even seared with a chocolate croissant.

There is a reason that Gabriel Rucker is a highly respected chef ? you?ll understand when you try his food. For a great experience, try the $65 five-course tasting menu. It?s a bit spendy, but worth it.?My review

Castagna7.?Castagna? has had its share of ups and downs over the years, and as a result, the overall quality of the food has varied. Most recently it gained a large following for its touches of molecular gastronomy under chef Matthew Lightner. He left in 2010, and sous chef Justin Woodward was promoted to his place.

Woodward is no lightweight himself. A graduate of Manhattan?s WD-50, he?s put his own stamp on the restaurant, and has quickly gained a following for his fresh look at our local ingredients, combining them with more refined techniques of molecular gastronomy than were found in earlier versions of the cuisine. For me, this is a good thing. I?ve had my share of the cuisine where it seemed the chef was trying to impress with ?gee wiz, that?s cool!? food than things I would order on a second visit. In a restrained hand, the cooking actually brings valuable techniques to the table. It is a complement to our great local ingredients, without stepping on them.

Though an ala cart menu is available, order the ten-course tasting menu. Yes, it is prix fixe $95, and everyone at your table has to order it. However, it is worth the price for the sheer variety and exploration of flavors and textures. This isn?t going out to dinner, it is going on an adventure.

I?ll have a complete review soon.

8. Nostrana ? Owner Cathy Whims has made Nostrana a success since the doors opened, consistently winning the PFD reader survey for Best Italian in Portland. The house-made charcuterie is a terrific first course that should not be missed. Duck liver & cheffy p?t?, coppa di testa, porchetta di testa, smoked lamb rillettes, fried pork trotter, ciccioli, red currants, preserved cherries and pickled kholrabi make up a large plate. It?s a tasting adventure sized just right for three to four people.?Grilled razor clams are laid out like butterflies, tasting of the sea. There were herbs and oil, perhaps some almonds, but mostly they tasted of wood smoke and salt with a long savory finish.

As they should, pizzas have good scorch, with little bubbles of black on not only the top, but a bit on the edges and all the way underneath. The mozzarella is hand-made, and the slow-risen dough is naturally leavened. Most nights they are close to perfect, crispy all the way through, with just the right balance of toppings, terrific flavors. A recent special with a topping of squash blossoms, burrata, tomato and oregano is straightforward but as good as it sounds, an homage to summer. ?Try the Diavola with spicy sausage, house mozzarella, provolone, San Marzano tomato and Mama Lil?s peppers, or the Salumi with calabrese salami, tomato, provolone, house mozzarella wild oregano, honey Lil?s peppers.

If you go to Nostrana expecting American pasta dishes, you may be disappointed. This is the real thing: bucatini with pesto and pickled white anchovies and rigatoni served in a sauce of guanciale, peas, fava beans, pecorino romano and black pepper are among current offerings. A menu favorite for years, the?fettuccine?in Marcella Hazzan?s #3 tomato and butter sauce is always a good choice for those who would rather stick to something more familiar. Overall, most of the pasta dishes are outstanding.

Desserts are hardly an afterthought. The budino is small, but very moist, oozing dark chocolate flavor. A real standout is the wood oven baked crisp; this week it is blueberry and peach. The ingredients are placed into a thin ceramic dish, topped it with sugar and cooked in the 700 degree oven. Twenty minutes later it is delivered sizzling to your table, the sugar crackly and caramelized. When it is brought to the table, your server will pour a small pitcher of thick almond cream over the top to cool it off.

Laurelhurst Market

Laurelhurst Market

9. Laurelhurst Market -

Laurelhurst Market is a temple to all things meat. Unusual for a restaurant, a meat case at the entry allows you to purchase various cuts to take home if you?d rather cook them yourself. However, judging by the nightly crowd, it seems like most people prefer to have the crew at LM do the cooking for them.

I?m not finished?with my complete review, but here are a few of my impressions. If you are into steak tartare and are willing to experiment, the Laurelhurst Market version is very nice. It?s a little different from most, with the addition of vodka and a ?salt-cured farm yolk?. As far as steaks go, I like the Steak & Sauteed Greens ? a bavette with ancho chili romesco; it tastes like a cow should taste, and while I admit I am biased towards anything with good romesco, I could happily eat this dish every time I?m there. Moving up in price, try the grilled flat iron with glazed shallots and shaved foie gras torchon, or the most expensive cut, a grilled ribeye which is cold smoked and served with blue cheese butter and sweet onion rings. Note that the prices are substantially lower than a traditional steakhouse. The bavette I mentioned is a mere $20, and the most expensive ribeye is $38 ? about $12 cheaper than competitors, but arguably better.

Personally, I?m a purist; serve me a slab of meat and some salt. I don?t need any damn blue cheese butter. The staff seems?accommodating? and I have a feeling they?d hold the topping if I asked.

My complaints so far are few. At times the service can be very slow, but is generally well-informed and friendly. If you don?t have reservations, there is a?long wait for a table on busy nights. It can also be challenging conversing with table mates ? it gets very noisy. This is not a romantic first date type of place.

Aviary-Octopus-Salad

Octopus Salad

10.?Aviary -?The food served at Aviary is executed with a rare degree of excellence. It is not merely to be consumed; it?s meant to be thought about, tasted with eyes closed, lingered over, and discussed with a good friend.?Salads are unusual, always showcasing the ingredients in new and interesting ways. One combines lightly dressed arugula, strips of Asian pear and celery root, thin bright wheels of watermelon radish and tiny grains of candied cumin. Without the latter, the near perfect composition of the other ingredients would make it stand out, but the scattering of the spicy little grains are like a spark waking the mind.?The crispy pig ears are, in a word, perfect. When the paella pan is brought to the table you are assaulted with the hot scent of steaming, rich coconut rice, which acts as an aromatic basket for salty chunks of Chinese sausage, avocado and barely wilted greens. Black vinegar-pickled daikon are scattered throughout, providing little prickly strands of flavor. The ears are delicate crispy wafers, almost like a meaty potato chip, the rice so rich and comforting I could eat an entire bowl. Every time I order this dish other people at the table recoil, but it always ends up being the star of the night. Full review

11.?St. Jack -?The glory of St. Jack has to be its pungent, deeply flavorful meats. The restaurant is heavily invested in organ meats, but even the timid may agree that the adventure is well worth the risk. A ?petit plat? of fried tripe is for sure a tad fatty, but it?s the kind that?s addictive and utterly delicious. The French call it tablier de sapeur, or ?fireman?s apron.? Basically the tripe is breaded and saut?ed, and slathered with a sauce of capers, red onion, and homemade mayonnaise, it has both crunch and lusciousness. Then there?s a salad of leeks and mixed greens topped with crispy bits from a pig?s head, a tantalizing mix of health and hedonism, just enough of the latter to give extra interest to the vegetables. There?s fowl afoot in the form of coq ? la bi?re instead of coq au vin. It?s a lighter dish than its more common cousin, drenched in sparkling farmhouse ale and not in the wine that stains the bird a blood-red, while pearl onions, wild mushrooms, and bacon give the chicken a pungent taste of the earth. But for those who really need a break from meat, one heavenly fish makes its appearance. Boned trout, a giant beauty curls in a semi-circle as if following the rim of the plate, bedded on a warm lentil salad. The trout is soft, moist, and as fresh as you?d wish for. A Simple Hearing Test Should Be a Part of Periodic Health Exams

Your heart and lungs are both important. Keeping up on your blood pressure and cholesterol is also something that every patient and physician should keep in mind. If you care about the major organs of the body, then you should care about your ears, too. A hearing test done periodically is important. What you hear can protect you from harm, how your ears work can affect balance, and even suggest major health issues.

If your physician does not already provide some type of hearing test, then it is important for you to talk to him or her about it. For some reason, it is a part of the body that is more neglected than others. What you, as well as your physician, need to realize is that the underlying conditions that could be impacting your ability to hear are important to discover.

Alzheimer?s disease is something that could actually be mistakenly diagnosed when someone loses some of their ability to hear. If you find that you seem to miss appointments, forget names, or feel uncomfortable in social situations, it may not be because you have the beginnings of dementia. It may be that you are struggling to hear. A hearing test before being tested for dementia would aid the accuracy of the diagnosis.

Someone struggling to hear might even spiral into depression. The person might feel lonely or discouraged. They might have no desire to go to parties or spend time with friends. This can come on slowly or suddenly depending on how quickly the loss settles in. If you notice these feelings or attitudes creeping in, you might want to have a quick hearing test done at a local testing center.

Brain tumors and other neurological disorders can affect the senses as well. These issues can be life threatening, so it is important that any condition is quickly identified. With these situations, it might be harder to get testing results because sensory ability can fluctuate. If you are having a problem but get a normal result, take the process into your own hands to some degree and set out to get the accurate help you need.

Considering all of these areas should help you to see the importance of getting a periodic hearing test. If you do see the importance, you would be wise to talk to your primary care physician about it. It might just put him or her into a new habit for patients.

Huntsville, AL hearing test results could uncover a previously unknown condition, or they may dispel fears of an illness. Find a caring staff and a convenient location near you at the following site: http://www.miracle-ear-huntsville.com.

Iraq Sunnis block trade routes in protest against PM Maliki

ANBAR, Iraq (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of Sunni Muslims blocked Iraq's main trade route to neighboring Syria and Jordan in a fourth day of demonstrations on Wednesday against Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.

The massive show of force marks an escalation in protests that erupted last week after troops detained the bodyguards of Sunni Finance Minister Rafaie Esawi, threatening to plunge Iraq deeper into political turmoil.

"The people want to bring down the regime," chanted thousands of protesters in the Sunni stronghold of Anbar, echoing the slogan used in popular revolts that ended in the toppling of the leaders of Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen.

Waving the old flag of Iraq that was changed after Sunni dictator Saddam Hussein was overthrown by the U.S.-led invasion of 2003, protesters sat in the road, choking off the main trade route between Iraq, Jordan and Syria.

Another smaller protest was held in the city of Samarra in the predominantly Sunni province of Salahuddin, next to Anbar.

The move against Esawi's guards came hours after President Jalal Talabani, a Kurd who has mediated among Sunni, Shi'ite and Kurdish factions, left for Germany for treatment for a stroke that could end his steadying influence over Iraqi politics.

The arrest was reminiscent of Maliki's move to arrest Sunni Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi, who he accused of running death squads, just as U.S. troops withdrew in December 2011.

Iraq's fragile power-sharing government has since lurched from crisis to crisis and the conflict in Syria risks reigniting sectarian tensions that brought the country to the brink of all-out civil war in 2005-2007.

Addressing the protesters, Esawi said the detention of his guards was politically motivated and that Maliki was deliberately provoking strife.

"It is enough! The country should not be run by such a mentality," he said, to cries of "God is greatest".

Maliki has sought to play his rivals off against one another to strengthen his alliances in Iraq's complex political landscape before provincial elections next year and a parliamentary vote in 2014.

Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, another rival of Maliki, offered his support to the protests in a statement, rejecting what he described as Maliki's sectarian policies.

U.S. appeals court revives workplace cybertheft lawsuit

NEW YORK (Reuters) - In a decision that could make it easier for businesses to police cybertheft in the workplace, a U.S. appeals court revived a chemical company's lawsuit accusing a former Toronto-area employee of using her home computer to steal trade secrets from its Connecticut server.

Reversing a lower court ruling, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York said U.S.-based MacDermid Inc may pursue civil damages claims against a former account manager under Connecticut state law, even though she conducted her alleged improper activity from her home in Fort Erie, Ontario.

Wednesday's decision may make it easier for U.S. companies to crack down on alleged computer theft that occurs in remote locations, including outside the country. In recent years, U.S. courts increasingly have dealt with cases involving downloads of corporate information by employees, both in criminal cases brought by prosecutors and civil cases filed by companies.

Jackie Deiter, the MacDermid account manager, had worked for the Waterbury, Connecticut-based company's MacDermid Chemicals unit in Mississauga, Ontario, from May 2008 until her termination in April 2011 for reasons unrelated to the lawsuit.

The company accused her of violating Connecticut laws on unauthorized computer access and misappropriating trade secrets by emailing customer data, laboratory reports, and pricing lists drawn from its Waterbury server. It said this occurred soon after Deiter had learned she was about to be fired.

Deiter admitted to emailing materials, but said in court papers that she did so for her job, and because she could not print at home from her employer-issued laptop.

U.S. District Judge Warren Eginton in New Haven, Connecticut said in November 2011 that he had no jurisdiction over MacDermid's lawsuit because Deiter had merely emailed information "from one computer in Canada to another computer in Canada."

But a unanimous three-judge panel of the 2nd Circuit said MacDermid's server was a computer under Connecticut law, and that it did not matter that Deiter had accessed it from outside the state, which she had never visited.

"Most Internet users, perhaps, have no idea of the location of the servers through which they send their emails," Circuit Judge Barrington Parker wrote for the panel.

"Here, however, MacDermid has alleged that Deiter knew that the email servers she used and the confidential files she misappropriated were both located in Connecticut," he added.

Parker also said "efficiency and social policies against computer-based theft are generally best served" by handling lawsuits in the states where computer files are misappropriated.

William Charamut, a lawyer for Deiter, declined to comment. Lawyers for MacDermid did not immediately respond to requests for comment. No criminal charges have been filed against Deiter.

In February, the 2nd Circuit threw out a federal criminal case against a former Goldman Sachs Group Inc computer programmer, saying his alleged theft of high-frequency trading code was not a crime under federal law.

Six months later, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance brought New York state criminal charges against the programmer, Sergey Aleynikov, over the same activity. Aleynikov has pleaded not guilty.

The 2nd Circuit has jurisdiction in Connecticut, New York and Vermont. It is among the more influential federal appeals courts, and other circuits often follow its reasoning.

The case is MacDermid Inc v. Deiter, 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, No. 11-5388.

Berlusconi allies fire barbs at Monti, ending Christmas truce

ROME (Reuters) - Italian politicians resumed their bickering on Wednesday, with supporters of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi taking aim at his successor Mario Monti despite a Christmas call from the Pope for political peace.

Just before midnight at the end of Christmas Day, Monti tweeted: "Together, we saved Italy from disaster. Now we have to renew politics. Complaining won't help anything. Rolling up sleeves will. Let's rise to politics!"

That irked center-right supporters of Berlusconi, who resigned last year to let Monti take over and is now scrapping with center-left and pro-Monti centrist blocs ahead of elections due February 24-25.

"Monti did not save Italy, he merely reaped the merits of four year of work by Berlusconi", said Gianfranco Rotondi, a parliamentarian from Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PDL) party.

Anna Maria Bernini, also of the PDL, accused Monti of spouting "pure propaganda", adding: "It is shocking to see how a man can present himself as a savior after bringing the country to recession, taking all the merit (for successes) and attributing all the disasters to others."

The mud-slinging took place less than a day after Pope Benedict urged Italian politicians in a Christmas address to "favor the spirit of cooperation for the common good".

Monti resigned last week as promised after the budget was passed, and is staying on in a caretaker capacity until the formation of a new government after the elections. Although his exact plans for after the elections are not entirely clear, he is expected to remain influential.

Berlusconi has said it would be "immoral" for Monti to fight the election after governing as an unelected premier with the support of the main parties.

But not all of the center right opposes the prime minister. Italia Libera (A Free Italy), a group of 11 parliamentarians who have defected from Berlusconi's PDL, praised Monti's economic reform plans as "a Copernican revolution for those who are used to something that is as erosive and unproductive as the duel between forces for or against Berlusconi".

MENGonline: MENG Blend: Job Search Has Evolved, Have You?

by Tim Tyrell-Smith????

?

?

TTS Strategy Charting.jpgSome people job search like it?s 1999:

?

  • They act like it will only take a few weeks ? after all, they?ve always been recruited away from their prior jobs.? How hard can this be?

?

  • They rely on a resume, a pile of recruiter contacts, and a fistful of hope that it will be enough this time around.

?

Well, the truth (the new normal) is that job search requires a whole new level of sophistication.

?

I?m sure that?s not what you wanted to hear.

?

Today?s job search requires a powerful network that includes a recruiter network (yes) but requires, more importantly, a well honed set of industry and community relationships.

?

And if you don?t have those relationships, you will need to dedicate a big portion of your first few weeks (at least) to rebuilding them.? And by adding new strategic relationships as soon as possible.

?

?Relationships, not resumes or recruiters, are the key to finding jobs.?

?

So it?s hard work and focus that win the race.? And, like no other period in the job market, it?s about having a clear and highly actionable strategy.

?

That strategy includes five key elements:

?

1. Clear job search objectives

?

When someone asks you ?what are you looking for,? your answer needs to offer specifics (including target companies).? This allows for the possibility of immediate engagement and, more importantly, the offer of an introduction to a company or person. Isn?t that what you want anyway?

?

2.? A strong and differentiated personal brand

?

You need to clearly demonstrate and communicate your unique value to friends, family, recruiters, HR folks, and hiring managers.? What are your strengths and work philosophy.? Can you position yourself against others going for the same job?? What are you telling people on LinkedIn or Twitter?? In short, ?why you??

?

3.? Well written marketing materials

?

Your r?sum?, cover letter, elevator pitch, bio, and business card are key places to carve out your spot in the industry.? You need to integrate your brand message and value into all of these materials.? And make sure that message is consistent no matter where people find you.? Are they consistent today?

?

4.? A purposeful use of your network

?

If you have clear job search objectives (see point 1), you can establish a very early and purposeful use of your network.? Instead of bouncing around the job boards or picking up business cards at random networking events, you can set your sights on specific events and online platforms where your networking targets are likely to be found.

?

5.? The development of powerful themes and stories

?

This is especially true for interviews when someone with ?the power to hire? is looking for a reason to hire you!? So what?s a good reason?? Here?s one:? when you are able to retell your accomplishment stories in such a vivid way that the interviewer gets all caught up and starts to imagine you already in the job.

?

Job search is hard work these days ? partly because it requires such a broad array of skills and efforts.? It?s no longer about a few well-placed phone calls and a well-distributed resume.

?

It?s about having a strategy.
