A recent article published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) reports on a study that was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of a corticosteroid injection for the treatment of plantar fasciitis.

Methods
In this study, 82? people?with diagnosed plantar fasciitis were randomly allocated to either a treatment group or a control group:
Treatment Group: 41 people in the treatment group were given an ultrasound guided injection to the plantar fascia with 1 mL of 4 mg/mL dexamethasone sodium phosphate.
Control Group: 40 people in the control group were given an ultrasound guided injection to the plantar fascia with 1 mL of normal saline solution (i.e. a placebo).
N.B: People in BOTH groups were also asked to complete a daily stretching programme (which the authors report has been shown to decrease pain associated with plantar fasciitis.)

Results
The results of this study showed that:
1. Four weeks after the injection, the people in the Treatment Group showed significantly greater improvements in foot pain (measured by the foot health status questionnaire) than those in the Control Group.
2. However, there was no significant difference between the Treatment and Control Groups when measured 8 and 12 weeks after the injection.
3. The reduction in the thickness of the plantar fascia was significantly greater in the Treatment Group than the Control Group when measured 4, 8 and 12 weeks after the injection.

Authors Conclusions
The authors of the article concluded that ?A single ultrasound guided dexamethasone injection is a safe and effective short term treatment for plantar fasciitis. It provides greater pain relief than placebo at four weeks and reduces abnormal swelling of the plantar fascia for up to three months. However, clinicians offering this treatment should also note that significant pain relief did not continue beyond four weeks.?
